| I just signed up here! I am currently studying abroad in Osaka right now, so I am having a wonderful time:) Japan is absolutely wonderful, and I love learning Japanese and Kansai ben as well. I would like to try translating manga sometime to see what it's like. I have so far studied Japanese for 11 months, which will soon become one year when January ends, and I plan on continuing my studies even after I get home. こんにちわ!カップケーキです!アメリカから来ました。今日本に留学します。日本に来る前に八ヶ月ぐらい日本語を勉強しました。大阪市と京都はきれいいで楽です。毎日新しい事を習っているのでいつか漫画を英語に漫画を訳してみたいです。よろしくお願いします!

| Hiya Decadent, What's Osaka like this time of year? I've always wanted to visit japan. Does it look like how the mangas portray it? And what happens when yu study abroad in japan? Do you live in a dormitory? Live with a local family as an exchange student? Or maybe yu rent yur own place? Heh...it must be so nice to live in japan ^^ Bet you could get yur hands on all the mangas yu want *droool* ^^ Hey, if you wanna try translating manga in the future, join our team!! I've got a nice kansai-ben manga you could use to practice yur japanese.

Whether or not you'd like to join us, Manga Translation is a good way of polishing skills. I'm not a tler myself ( i dont understand a lick of jap you posted), I've been told that simple series (shounen series in particular) don't require as much kanji knowlegde then one would expect. I think it has to do with the fact that they tend to have furigana in them so its easier. Stuff like seinen, which is geared towards adults has less furigana and more wordiness will probably be harder, but will definitely help your vocab.
There's a lot of resources out there for tlers too: such as mangahelpers and #translators, an irc channel to help other TLers if they need to figure something out. There are also other tlers in the group you join that u can ask (example: In IA, we have a jap tl who's on constantly in our irc channel. We are always bugging him if we need verification or some minor tl from him.) I also have a link that has a tutorial on how to make a script and a list of resources for newbie tlers (which reminds me, I should post that in the training section.) Either way, if you ever take the plunge, there's help.

*Flips Irie and holds her in a headlock. * Uh-hu... and your an innocent lamb for not even mentioning that kansai-ben manga you've been itching to do...
Excuse us. No one saw anything!! *drags irie away before we embarras ourselves further*

| I think that when it comes to everyday scenery in Japan, Bakuman is very accurate. As for Osaka, I say it looks a lot like how the Detective Conan anime series depicts it. I am currently living with a host family right now. At first, it was hard to get used to them, mainly the children, but now I get along a lot better with them. And especially from the kids, I learned a little bit of Kansai ben. Kyoto is definitely the place you want to go if you want to see traditional Japan, and is especially gorgeous in the fall with all of the leaves changing color. I would love to translate for you guys, but do I need to take a test first, or fill in an application or something? As for kanji, I know about around 180-200 kanji, it's not much, but it will get closer to 300 soon, and I have a wonderrful kanji dictionary add-on installed on my computer as well. And there is manga everywhere here, it's awesome. Also I was given a book from the Osaka Communication Arts school, and it features the work of their students, they're really nicely illustrated manga in there, so it is neat to be able to see it. I got to see how anime become animated, that was a lot of fun. | |

Oh that sounds sooo cool. Yeah, I heard about Kyoto being a very traditional place since I have friends who are doing a study abroad program over in Japan. Though, I have to say most of them go to Tokyo. I would love to go to japan to visit (and buy as much manga as possible to bring back) , but I have no money.... T-T. I actually applied to go to Japan but it was a high demand program (read: I didnt get in) ; The good thing was I still got to go somewhere (the UK). As for translation, we don't have any exam for translators, we simply communicate with you and try to match you with a series that you like and is within your ability. I'll email you the details.

I arrived in late January, and even if the earthquake would have happened while I was in Japa, I would have been in the western area, which wasn't affected. Thank you for posting!

i see there's no space in jap writings 十四歳の誕生日おめでとうございます。 Well, when you use kanji, it becomes easier to seperate the words.
